'Til Tuesday

A little something about 'Til Tuesday
Quick, name a 'Til Tuesday song other than "Voices Carry"... Unless you own one of their albums, your eyes are probably glazing over right now in disinterest. 'Til Tuesday stormed MTV and the pop charts in 1985 with "Voices Carry," their dramatic first hand account of a love affair turned sour. Two other singles were released from the "Voices Carry" album, along with the obligatory accompanying video, but neither were able to generate much MTV/top 40 radio interest. The band's later efforts faired much the same, as albums were released in 1986 and 1988 and quickly passed into obscurity. Aimee Mann, 'Til Tuesday's chanteuse-extraordinaire, has spent the past few years trying to make people forget about her bad hair days in the '80s. She would much rather be recognized for her current solo career, having released two albums under her own name. She has a beautiful voice and is a strong song writer, and her solo work has been gradually gaining a respectful following. "Voices Carry" was something of a precursor to the '90s phenomenon of the 'angry white female.' Mann's recent solo work places her in the same catagory as P.J. Harvey, Tori Amos and Liz Phair, while mainstream commercial success has been reserved for such infinitely less talented members of this pseudo-genre as Alanis Morisette and Courtney Love.
Voices Carry
I'm in the dark, I'd like to read his mind
but I'm frightened of the things I might find
Oh, there must be something he's thinking of
to tear him away
when I tell him that I'm falling in love
why does he say

Hush hush
keep it down now
voices carry

I try so hard not to get upset
because I know all the trouble I'll get
oh, he tells me tears are something to hide
and something to fear
and I try so hard to keep it inside
so no one can hear

Hush hush
keep it down now
voices carry

He wants me
but only part of the time
He wants me
if he can keep me in line

Hush hush
keep it down now
voices carry

hush hush, darling, she might overhear
oh, no-voices carry
he said shut up he said shut up
oh God can't you keep it down
voices carry
I wish he would let me talk
