Thomas Dolby
A little something about Thomas Dolby
The name Thomas Dolby will be forever be associated with the 1983 hit "She Blinded Me With Science," a playful, dance-able classic of early '80s techno-pop. His next biggest hit "Hyperactive" peaked in the U.S, at #62, which for many Americans qualifies him for one-hit-wonder status. But there is more to Thomas Dolby than just this memorable, as his has been one the more diverse careers of our early '80s artists.
Thomas Robertson picked up the nickname Dolby for his penchant for computer programing and putting together his own eletronic instruments. His synthesizer talents were employed by a variety of artists, from rockers Def Leppard to manager-turned-pop-star Malcolm McLaren. When it came time to turn out his own work, the result was "The Golden Age of Wireless," an early '80s synth-pop gem which includes "She Blinded Me With Science" as well as the touching "Europa and the Pirate Twins" and the haunting "One of Our Submarines," my favorite Dolby tune. He has put out several albums since then, has directed his own videos, and worked with other artists in writer and producer roles.
Dolby's path has led him gradually away from pop music and to Hollywood, where he has written and produced film scores. Recently Dolby has been moving into higher tech realms, produces a virtual-reality music program and recording video game soundtracks.

She Blinded Me With Science
It's poetry in motion
she turned her tender eyes to me
as deep as any ocean
as sweet as any harmony
mm - but she blinded me with science
"she blinded me with science!"
and failed me in biology
When I'm dancing close to her
"blinding me with science - science!"
I can smell the chemicals
"blinding me with science - science!"
"Science!"
"Science!"
mm - but it's poetry in motion
and when she turned her eyes to me
as deep as any ocean
as sweet as any harmony
mm - but she blinded me with science
and failed me in geometry
When she's dancing next to me
"blinding me with science - science!"
"Science!"
I can hear machinery
"blinding me with science - science!"
"Science!"
It's poetry in motion
and now she's making love to me
the spheres're in commotion
the elements in harmony
she blinded me with science
"she blinded me with science!"
and hit me with technology
"good heavens Miss Sakamoto - you're beautiful!"
I -
I don't believe it!
there she goes again!
she's tidied up, and I can't find anything!
all my tubes and wires
and careful notes
and antiquated notions
but! - it's poetry in motion
and when she turned her eyes to me
as deep as any ocean
as sweet as any harmony
mm - but she blinded me with science
"she blinded me with - with science!"
she blinded me with -
Airwaves
Strange how the scale forms
In tiny patterns
On my atenna
and The Five O'Clock Show, hello hello ...
Brooklyn is crawling with famous people
I turn my vehicle beneath the river, west from south
Through the airwaves-
people never read the airwaves
Do we only feed the airwaves
I really should have seen through the airwaves
Electric fences line our new freeway
Here in the half-light, the motorhomes leave
Knee-deep in water under a pylon
How slow my heartbeat
How thin the air I'm breathing in
Through the airwaves -
People never read the airwaves
do we only feed the airwaves
Or stamp them out at street level ?
Airwaves - the dampness of the wind
The airwaves - the tension of the skin
The airwaves
Be in my broadcast when this is over
Give me your shoulder, I need a place
To wait for morning
No it was nothing - some car backfiring -
Please don't ask questions
I itch all over
Let me sleep
Through the airwaves -
People never read the airwaves
Do we only feed the airwaves
Or stamp them out at street level ?
Airwaves - the dampness of the wind
The airwaves - the tension of the skin
The airwaves I really should have seen through ...
