Squeeze
A little something about Squeeze
In the early '80s it became fashionable for bands to cop the looks and moves of motown acts from the '50s and '60s. Some notable early '80s bands even had hits with motown covers, including Soft Cell ("Tainted Love") and the English Beat ("The Tears of a Clown"). But one of the few bands actually talented enough to successfully recreate the motown sound with an original composition was London new wave act Squeeze.
Squeeze was a rare breed in the early '80s in that their success came primarily from their songwriting talent. Singers/guitarists Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook were often hailed as the Lennon/McCartney of the new wave. The songs they penned spanned a number of styles, from their punk beginning to funky disco to American country to '80s synth-pop to some pretty soulful motown.
Formed in the punk environment of London in the mid '70s, Squeeze's songwriting talent quickly became difficult to overlook. They attracted such talented production help as John Cale and Elvis Costello, who's voice can be heard on this week's selection. Sadly, Squeeze broke up in 1982, not long after attracting international attention with the success of "Black Coffee in Bed" and "Tempted." The original line-up got back together in 1985, and the resulting studio work demonstrated that the magic was still there.

Black Coffee in Bed
There's a stain on my notebook
Where your coffee cup was
And there's ash in the pages
Now I've got myself lost
I was writing to tell you
That my feelings tonight
Are a stain on my notebook
That rings your goodbye
Now she's gone
And I'm back on the beat
A stain on my notebook
Says nothing to me
Now she's gone
And I'm out with a friend
With lips full of passion
And coffee in bed
With the way that you left me
I can hardly contain
The hurt and the anger
And the joy and the pain
Now knowing I am single
They'll be fire in my eyes
And a stain in my notebook
For a new love tonight
Now she's gone
And I'm back on the beat
A stain on my notebook
Says nothing to me
Now she's gone
And I'm out with a friend
With lips full of passion
And coffee in bed
From the lips without passion
To the lip with a kiss
There's nothing of your love
That I'll ever miss
The stain on my notebook
Remains all that's left
Of the memory of late nights
And coffee in bed
Now she's gone
And I'm back on the beat
A stain on my notebook
Says nothing to me
Now she's gone
And I'm out with a friend
With lips full of passion
And coffee in bed
853-5937
853-5893 Angela can't make itto the 'phone,
if your care to leave your name and number
she'll give you a ring when she is home.
Everytime I called her I got the message
I listened to the voice coming down the line,
I couldn't speak to a tape recording
I re dialled it a number of times.
853-5937 Angela can't make it to the 'phone,
if you care to leave your name and number
please speak clearly after the tone,
she'll give ou a ring when she get's home.
I rang her this morning so very early
sthe same old message coming down the 'phone,
I should go and see if her house is empty
maybe she's poorly perhaps she's not home.
she's in mill hill I'm in bermondsey
it's the end of the earth on the northern line.
it makes it so hard for me to see,
the one that I love but can never find.
I called up a close friend who lives right by her
I got the message he was out too,
I was suspicious are they together
I've got to find out that that isn't true
853-5937 853-5937 853-5937 853-5937.
Tempted
I bought a toothbrush, some toothpaste, a flannel for my face
Pajamas, a hairbrush, new shoes and a case.
I said to my reflection, Let's get out of this place.
Passed the church and the steeple, the laundry on the hill
Billboards and the buildings
Memories of it still keep calling
And calling
But forget it all I know I will
Tempted by the fruit of another
Tempted but the truth is discovered
What's been going on
Now that you have gone
There's no other
Tempted by the fruit of another
Tempted but the truth is discovered
I'm at the carpark, the airport, the baggage carousel
The people keep on grabbing, ain't wishing I was well
I said, "It's no occasion. It's no story I can tell."
At my bedside, empty pocket, a foot without a sock
Your body gets much closer
I fumble for the clock, alarmed by
The seduction
I wish that it would stop
Tempted by the fruit of another
Tempted but the truth is discovered
What's been going on
Now that you have gone there's no other
Tempted by the fruit of another
Tempted but the truth is discovered
I bought a novell, some perfume, a fortune all for you
But it's not my conscience that hates to be untrue.
I asked of my reflection,
Tell me what is there to do?
Tempted by the fruit of another
Tempted but the truth is discovered
What's been going on
Now that you have gone there's no other
Tempted by the fruit of another
Tempted but the truth is discovered
