Siouxsie and the Banshees

A little something about Siouxsie and the Banshees
Siouxsie and the Banshees have probably enjoyed the longest run of success and been blessed with the most loyal following of any '70s UK punk act. For two decades and counting they have put out consistantly good albums, toured regularly both in Europe and the States, worked on some incredible side projects, and inspired millions of young women to look like corpses. Siouxsie Sioux and Steve Severin jumped on the Sex Pistols band wagon when punk was bigger than bell bottoms in the mid '70s, and when they got their first chance to 'perform' on stage it was with future Ant and long time Adam Ant collaborator Marco Pirroni on guitar, and Pistols bassist Sid Vicious on drums, who was probably a musical liability no matter what he was playing. By all accounts the group didn't quite have it together - Siouxsie screamed the Lord's Prayer for 20 minutes while everyone else made noise - but given the surrounding music scene it was probably just what the audience had paid for. Siouxsie and Severin would pick up a real drummer in Budgie, while the guitar role has been filled by someone new on just about every album. One of the more notable Banshee guitarist has been Robert Smith, who's band The Cure used to open for Siouxsie and the Banshees. Siouxsie fans who aren't particularly wild about Fat Bob and the Boys should check out the Swimming Horses video, featuring an unusually - and thankfully - silent and subserviant Smith. The band took a break in the mid '80s when Severin and Smith teamed up as The Glove, but their excellent Blue Sunshine LP was eclipsed by Siouxsie and Budgie's work as The Creatures. The Creatures blessed the world of music with two percussion-driven LPs, and put on one of the best live shows I have ever been fortunate enough to see... but I have gone on way too long about one of my favorite bands

Spellbound

From the cradle bars
comes a beckoning voice
it sends you spinning
you have no choice...

You hear laughter
cracking through the walls
it sends you spinning
you have no choice

Following the footsteps
of a rag doll dance
we are entranced
Spellbound

Following the footsteps
of a rag doll dance
we are entranced
Spellbound

And don't forget
when your elders forget
to say their prayers
take them by the legs
and throw them down the stairs

When you think your toys
have gone beserk
it's an illusion
you cannot shirk
you hear laughter
cracking through the walls
it sends you spinning
you have no choice

Following the footsteps
of a rag doll dance
we are entranced
Spellbound...
