A little something about OMD
Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys, known to most as Orchestral Manoeuvers in the Dark, were among the first wave of British musicians with vision of pop grandeur to embrace electronic music. Their desire to create a synth band stemmed in part from their interest in the music of synth masters Kraftwerk, and in part from the relative ease of picking up keyboards and crafting professional-sounding music, the duo having no formal musical training. But in the late '70s enough eyes were turning to the music scene in their home town of Liverpool that they were able to catch somebody's, and in 1979 OMD's first single was released on UK indie Factory Records. Playing in support of such bands as Joy Division and Public Image Limited, OMD soon caught the attention of Virgin Records, and a success pop career was launched. The early '80s were exceptionally good to OMD... much more lucrative than the years were to their fellow Liverpool bands such as Echo and the Bunnymen and The Teardrop Explodes. OMD scored a few moderate success, from "Enola Gay" to "Joan of Arc," before really scoring internationally in the mid '80s with "Tesla Girls," "Forever Live and Die" and Pretty In Pink track "If You Leave," among many others.
