A little something about Guns n' Roses
These guys were certainly my favorite hard rock group of the late '80s - "Appetite for Destruction" is a masterpiece, one of the truly great hard rock albums of all time. However, it was inevitable that this volatile bunch would crash. You're probably thinking it's the same old "rise and fall" scenario, right? In simple terms, yes. The first to get fired was drummer Steve Adler when he couldn't control his drug abuse. He was replaced by Matt Sorum. Next to fall was guitarist Izzy Stradlin, who left to form a solo project "Izzy Stradlin & The Ju Ju Hounds". By the time the group went on its 1993 stadium tour, co-headlining with Metallica, it had become an overblown entity--they added two keyboardists and a horn section, and it was all too much. Slash left late in '96. Axl Rose remains, and GNR still do the odd gig - Reports out of Las Vegas, where GNR played shows Saturday and Monday (December 29 and 31, 2001) at the Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, say Slash was barred admittance to the venue for the latter gig, with a security guard telling reporters that the order came from Rose. Rose seemingly has a problem with all his former bandmates, as another report had him saying he would walk out if he noticed any former GNR members in the crowd. But Slash remains optimistic : When he was recently asked about a possible GNR reunion, he said.. "We've had so many offers to do gigs, and none of us has done it for the money," he says. "But if the band wanted to get together and go, 'You know what? Let's just hash it out for a second and then see where that takes us,' I would go and do a show. F--k, yeah. I mean, what would it take to go into three, four, six, 12 hours of rehearsal for one, two, three, four, five shows with Guns, with guys I f--king basically lived with for God knows how long. I would do it in a heartbeat".Slash says GNR ended way before its time : "You had pretty much a band that did everything their own way and got away with it, became really successful, had tons of fans, a real loyal following, and so on and so forth. All of the sudden it breaks up, but it was a systematic thing. First it's the drummer, then it's the rhythm guitar player, then it's me, then it's the bass player. It was so hard to keep that band together."
