Devo

A little something about Devo
This early synthpop band were certainly ahead of their time. Jerky movements and strange outfits pumped up with synthesized music was the defining feature of Devo. But in 1978, four quirky guys, Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh and Jerry and Bob Casale, released Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!, and Devo formed. Devo introduced a mixed-up, sci-fi sound to the music world. Complete with heavy synthesizers and electronic music, the group went on to release an album a year between 1978 and 1982, with five albums in total. In 1992, Warner Brothers put together The Greatest Hits. The group is probably most well-known for their early MTV video for "Whip It," where the brothers Mothersbaugh and Casale donned black shirts and pyramid-like red plastic headgear, wielding long bull whips in the setting of a small Texas border town. Feminists attacked "Whip It" saying that it "..promoted abuse against women", yet Devo insist that the video was merely an artistic statement. Still to this day, Devo get together for occasional live performances.

Lyrics shown below : "Whip it", "Peek-a-boo!"

Whip it

Crack that whip
Give the past the slip
Step on a crack
Break your momma's back

When a problem comes along
You must whip it
Before the cream sits out too long
You must whip it
When something's going wrong
You must whip it

now whip it
into shape
shape it up
get straight
go forward
move ahead
try to detect it
it's not too late
to whip it
whip it good

When a good time turns around
You must whip it
You will never live it down
Unless you whip it
No one gets their way
Until they whip it

I say whip it
Whip it good
