Dead or Alive

A little something about Dead or Alive
The flamboyant, androgynous Dead or Alive front man Pete Burns came of age in the musically rich Liverpool of the late '70s. Among his earliest forays into music was gig at Eric's in Liverpool with Peter Wylie (later of Wah! Heat) and Julian Cope (The Teardrop Explodes) as The Mystery Girls. Dead or Alive rose from the ashes of Burns' band Nightmare In Wax, an atypical late '70s Liverpool band in that they cared neither about their image nor the quality of their music. With the change in 1980 to Dead or Alive came a more somber, melodramatic tone, and a good deal of attention was given to Burns' gender-bending look. Despite the attention the band received because of their image their music failed to impress, and as the decade wound on their record label began to weary of the band's lack of a hit. Much to the chagrin of Burns, the first hit came in 1984 with a song the band didn't care for and had only recorded as a joke - a cover of K.C. & the Sunshine Band's "That's The Way (I Like It)." While it didn't present the band's best side, it did put them on the map and renewed the industry's confidence in Dead or Alive. The result was a tour and a new album, "Sophisticated Boom Boom." The US discovered Dead or Alive the following year with the release of "Youthquake," and the dance hit "You Spin Me Round." The success continued in 1986 with their "Mad, Bad and Dangerous To Know" album and the hit "Brand New Lover."
