A little something about Cyndi Lauper
Cyndi Lauper's is a true rags-to-riches story, though even at the peak of her stardom she paid homage to her working class roots through her poverty-inspired thrift store fashions. Lauper's beginnings were inauspicious: she was raised in Brooklyn by a single mother who waited tables to pay the bills. Her singing career nearly came to an end, having ruined her voice by 1977. Under the guidance of a voice coach, she sang with folk-rock band group Blue Angel, only to find herself filing for bankruptcy after the band split and lost a lawsuit to their management company. The early '80s would bring a dramatic turnaround for Lauper, as her boyfriend/manager managed to pen her a contract with the Portrait label, a division of CBS. "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" introduced the world to Cyndi Lauper, and audiences on both sides of the Atlantic responded by taking the single as far as #2 on the charts. The video featured Lauper's mother in the role, of course, of Lauper's mother. Her debut album, "She's So Unusual," showed her at her most playful, from half-serious hits such as "She Bop" to a faithful rendition of a sixty year old boy-toy piece. With the album came a number 1 hit with "Time After Time," Rolling Stone and Grammy (ha!) Awards for Best New Artist, and MTV Best Female Video award, and even Ms. Magazine's Woman of the Year award.

While she had another number 1 hit in 1986 with "True Colors," Lauper could never recreate the excitement of her first outing and has seen a gradual decline in interest and critical response. But lack of interest has not stopped her from continuing to both record and tour, and she saw a brief comeback in the U.K. a few years ago with the release of "Twelve Deadly Cyns..." a greatest hits album of sorts with remixes as well as some new material.
