Roxy Music

A little something about Roxy Music
If my little write-ups of early '80s synth pop bands are beginning to sound repetitive I apologize, but the truth is that a good number of '80s bands were heavily influenced by a few important '70s artists: David Bowie, Kraftwerk, and Roxy Music. Roxy Music may never have existed had singer/keyboard player Bryan Ferry not failed an audition to become part of late '60s/early '70s art-rock band King Crimson. Determined to put together his own King Crimson, Ferry drafted the talents of guitarist Phil Manzanera, classically trained keyboard/sax player Andy Mackay, and 'visual artist' turned musician Brian Eno. Citing influences as diverse as Jimi Hendrix, the Velvet Underground, and Frank Sinatra, Roxy Music had a look that likened them to the glam rockers of the early '70s, but their music couldn't be labeled so conveniently. Ferry's melodic crooning and Mackay's sax and oboe was juxtaposed against Eno's electronic experiments involving sound loops and musical static. Though many didn't know what to think of the band, enough critics and fans decided they liked the music to make Roxy Music a success. Eno left the band in 1973 and released several solo works before settling into his role as producer, where he has been able to craft the music of the likes of Bowie, the Talking Heads and U2. Roxy Music has continued sans-Eno, and saw another decade of success. They had a number of hits in the '70s, their American breakthrough coming in 1976 with the success of "Love Is The Drug." Their success carried into the 1980s, with the album Avalon becoming a late-era Roxy Music classic. But their biggest influence on the '80s was no doubt the flood of new wave synth-bands inspired to make music by the likes of Roxy Music.

Lyrics shown below : "More than this" , "Avalon"

More Than This

I could feel at the timeThere was no way of knowingFallen leaves in the nightWho can say where they're blowingAs free as the the windAnd hopefully learningWhy the sea on the tideHas no way of turningMore than this - there is nothingMore than this - tell them on thingMore than this - there is nothingIt was fun for a whileThere was no way of knowingLike a dream int he nightWho can say where we're goingNo care in the worldMaybe I'm learningWhy the sea on the tideHas no way of turningMore than this - there is nothingMore than this - tell them on thingMore than this - there is nothing

Avalon

Now the party's over
I'm so tired
Then I see you coming
Out of nowhere
Much communication in a motion
Without conversation or a notion

Avalon

When the samba takes you
Out of nowhere
And the background's fading
Out of focus
Yes the picture's changing
Every moment
And your destination
You don't know it

Avalon

When you bossanova
There's no holding
Would you have me dancing
Out of nowhere

Avalon ...
