Australians INXS came together in 1977 as the Farriss Brothers, around the song-writing nucleus of Andrew Farriss (just one of three Farriss brothers) and singer Michael Hutchence. In 1979 the six piece band changed their name to INXS, and success in their hometown of Sydney led to an Australian record deal and national exposure. In 1983 the band released their first album with international backing, "Shabooh Shoobah," and headed to North America for an extensive tour of the States. It was in New York that the band recorded their break-through single, "Original Sin." The song was produced by Nile Rodgers, who added more funk to the band's pop-rock sound, and featured Daryl Hall on backing vocals. The song became a hit in the States, Europe, and reached number one back home... and remains the only INXS song that I really like. For the rest of the '80s INXS could do no wrong. 1985's "Listen Like Theives" album helped them crack the US top ten with the single "What You Need." The release in 1987 of "Kick" secured their status as international pop stars, with such singles as "Devil Inside" and "Need You Tonight," which hit number 1 in the US. Michael Hutchence committed suicide in a hotel room in Sydney on November 22, 1997.
